The Nigerian Senate has pledged to expedite the consideration of the expected new minimum wage bill, which will be submitted by the Executive arm of the government. This commitment is aimed at enhancing the welfare of workers and fostering industrial harmony across the nation.

The Senate’s plan for swift deliberation on the bill was revealed through a statement issued by Senator Diket Plang, Chairman of the Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, representing APC Plateau Central.

Senator Plang assured the Nigerian populace of the 10th Senate’s dedication to improving the living conditions of workers as part of its efforts to combat the prevailing high levels of poverty.

He commended the Federal Government and Organized Labour for initiating the process of reviewing the current minimum wage in Nigeria. This move was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed by the negotiating parties.

Furthermore, Senator Plang emphasized the readiness of the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity under his leadership to promptly consider and pass a new bill once negotiations on the matter are successfully concluded, and the bill is transmitted to the National Assembly for enactment.

In light of recent events, Senator Plang commended the Federal Government for taking proactive measures to avert a nationwide strike by workers the previous week. However, he cautioned all parties involved not to backtrack on the agreements reached, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the negotiated terms.

Senator Plang reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to the principles of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for decent work and pledged to take necessary legislative action in support of endeavors that enhance working conditions for Nigerians, including the implementation of a living wage, as outlined in the decent work agenda.
