A faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule on Tuesday held a plenary section at the Assembly Complex under heavy security presence.
This came barely less than 24 hours after the factional Speaker of the House, Edison Ehie, alleged and assassination attempt on him by some persons he said were police officers.
The plenary session generated tension across the state as four security vans were used to block the Moscow Road axis leading to the complex, as security operatives ensured a total blockade of the road both to human and vehicle access.
The section was held by Martin Amaewhule of the Pro-Nyesom Wike faction and 24 of his other members successfully carried out legislative duties at House of Assembly Complex, which was burnt when the crisis broke out last month.
It was believed that the security arrangement was apperently to prevent uninvited lawmakers and other unauthorized persons from accessing the Assembly complex.
According to a source, the lawmakers were said to have deliberated on two items; the suspension of the strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, and also to ask the police to prosecute the burning of the chamber.
The entrance of the State House of Assembly was locked immediately after the sitting by some police officers. This however could not stop the sitting of the other faction – the Edison Ehie.
According to sources closed to the Edison Ehie-led faction, it was disclosed that the faction has sympathy for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and the Ehie faction in their session passed a vote of confidence on the Governor.
The faction commended the Governor on his developmental strides and security initiatives to keep Rivers State peaceful, stressing that it takes a man of great vision and peace to steer the ship of development for the benefit of the people of the State. It was not revealed where the faction held their factional sitting.
The Edison Ehie-led faction has promised “to continuously give the governor the required support to accomplish his consolidation and continuity agenda to benefit the state.
The lawmakers went further to condemn the attack on the Speaker’s residence and the burning of the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The House went further to appealed to the governor to commence the rehabilitation works as soon as possible.
