The Northern Senators Forum has called upon President Bola Tinubu, the chairman of ECOWAS, to swiftly lift restrictions on Niger Republic in a bid to address the fallout from the recent military coup in the country. The senators emphasized the urgency of this action, citing its importance for the business and border communities.
This was made known during an emergency meeting of the forum, led by Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) strongly condemning the military intervention disrupting the democratic fabric across West Africa.
Specifically targeting the coup in Niger Republic, the senators urged the military junta to ease tensions with ECOWAS by releasing President Muhammed Bazoum and his family for asylum elsewhere.
Expressing concern for the people of Niger Republic, the forum stressed the necessity of humanitarian aid, drawing parallels to the suffering witnessed in Gaza following recent events.
They implored President Tinubu, in his capacity as ECOWAS chairman, to restore electricity supply to Niger Republic in accordance with the Nigeria-Niger treaty mandate.
