The political drama going on in Rivers State has taken a new dimension as 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by factional Speaker Martin Amaewhule have dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The 27 lawmakers out of the 32-member Assembly are loyalists of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike who has been at loggerheads with his successor, Siminialayi Fubara.
This development will certainly lead to a new twist of events in the state going forward as the state governor, Fubara, now has only five lawmakers behind him led by factional Speaker Edison Ehie.
A member of the Assembly, Enemi George, confirmed to Channels Television that the 27 lawmakers were under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule.
He said the decision was taken during their sitting on Monday morning.
The lawmakers cited division within the PDP as the primary reason for their defection to the APC.
The lawmakers sat under tight security mounted at the entrance of the Assembly complex along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
