Wife of the Delta State Governor, Mrs Tobore Oborevwori, has donated the sum of N5 million (five million naira) to support the fight against gender and sexual-based violence in the state.

Mrs. Oborevwori made the donation in Asaba, after recieving various women groups on a solidarity march to her office, led by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Pat Ajudua.

According to reports, the walk was part of the climax of activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism to eliminate violence against women.

Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori promised to collaborate with the women and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts at reducing incidents of gender and sexual-based violence to the minimum.

“I know you people cannot do it alone. I have some drinks and water, and I will support you with five million naira,” she said.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Pat Ajudua, explained that the purpose of the 16 Days of Activism was aimed at highlighting harmful practices against women such as domestic violence, marginalization and female genital mutilation.

Hon. Ajudua stressed, “Children are violated; they are raped everyday. Women are beaten up; they are abused by their husbands, by relatives. We are fighting against these violent practices against women and girls.”

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, decried the suffering of women from complications of sexual and gender-based violence and commended the sensitization effort.

Similarly, the state chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Stellamaris Mejulu, described violence against women as a pandemic, thus FIDA had been in the forefront to tackle the menace in conjunction with relevant stakeholders.

She observed, “FIDA is and organization that never sleeps over the issues of women and children. So, we are very passionate about things that matter to them.”

Meanwhile, the Coordinator of 50/50 Women Action Group, Mrs Pat Gbenudu, called for an end to rape, child labour, and harmful cultural practices against women and girls in the society.
