Parish Priest of St. Francis Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Andrew Obinyan, said he has decided to heed the pleas by diverse groups and notable individuals in the state and beyond to contest the 2024 governorship election in the state.

Fr. Obinyan revealed this while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Conference Hall, saying the decision followed his conclusion of consultation with relevant stakeholders in the state including several youth groups.

“I have decided to join the Edo 2024 governorship race to serve and not to be served,” Obinyan said.

Also speaking, Sir Jude Aigbona, Head of Fr. Obinyan Movement, said they were at the NUJ Secretariat to formally present Rev. Fr. Andrew Obinyan to Edo people as their choice candidate in the forthcoming Edo governorship election.

“We have seen politicians rule as governors in Edo and in other places. Today, let us also try a man of God. He is a man that will make a difference in this country in terms of good governance,” Aigbona said.

He further said that the Obinyan Movement cuts across political divide in the state and called on the youths to join the movement so that Fr. Obinyan can be nominated and elected during the governorship election.

However, Fr. Obinyan is yet to join any political party for the contest which he promised to announce at a later date.
