Ugbowo Bombers have won the first edition of the Oba of Benin Veterans Cup after seeing off Uwa All-Stars via penalties.

The football tournament was put together by the Edo Football Association as part of activities to celebrate the yearly Igue festival and the yuletide season in the state.

The final match which took place at the Western Boys High School Mini Stadium, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City on Thursday, was an exciting one as spectators were kept on the edge of their seats.

Players of both teams though above 45 years old, were at their best displaying good football skills and techniques while entertaining the fans.

Ugbowo Bombers went ahead, taking the lead when Humphrey Idemudia drove through from halfway of the field, beating the on-rushing keeper and a defender, before slotting the ball into an empty net.

The breakthrough goal spur Ugbowo Bombers to opening up for more attacks, however, they were pegged back by their opponents.

Moments afterwards, Uwa All-Stars rose up to the occasion and grabbed an equalizer through Asueni Shakiru who chipped the ball beautifully over the goalie.

The opening half saw both teams playing out their best, getting a goal apiece as the game ended in a 1-1 draw at the break.

The encounter soon restarted in the second period, with several changes made by the two coaches in search for more goals.

Nonetheless, either side could not find a wining goal after several scoring chances, and the tie had to be decided on penalties.

It was a lengthy penalty shootout where both sides missed their first-kicks that later rolled over to 12 kicks.

Ultimately, Ugbowo Bombers prevailed 10-9 via penalties, taking the winners medals at the expense of hard-fighting Uwa All Stars FC.

The champions clinched a gigantic trophy and received a cheque of N250,000 for their efforts and hardwork, while runners-up Uwa All-Stars got a cash price of N150,000.

According to Edo FA Chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, the tourney will be an annual sustained event effective from 2024, with proper organization for players above 45 years of age.

“I want to assure the participating teams that this tournament that will become an annual football ritual from next year, will come bigger and better with proper organisation from us,” Fred said.
