… as Edo celebrates Igue festival

The Edo State Football Association for the first time celebrates the annual Igue festival with a football carnival which rounds off today with Ugbowo Bombers FC battling Uwa All Stars FC in the final match of the maiden Edition of the Oba of Benin Veterans Cup Tournament.

The football tourney is part of activities organised by the Edo FA to celebrate the annual Igue Festival and the yuletide season in Edo State.

According to the Chairman, Edo State Football Association, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, the tournament ends on Thursday, December 28th, 2023 at 9 am, at the Western Boys High School Mini Stadium, Ikpoba Hill Benin City.

The anticipated final game promises to be thrilling and entertaining.

Fred Newton Erhunmwunse stated that the tournament will be an annual sustained event effective 2024 with proper organisation of the tourney for players above 45 years of age.

“This tournament has come to stay, and I must commend the cup donor, US-based Michael Ogbebor, a former footballer who has promised to support the tournament in his own little way.

“I want to assure the participating teams that this tournament that will become an annual football ritual from next year, will come bigger and better with proper organisation from us,” Fred said.

The Edo FA boss used the occasion to congratulate His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin on the joyous occasion of the Igue festival, noting that the final match of the maiden veteran’s cup will see the teams take home medals, cash, trophy and individual awards.

Meanwhile, the Edo FA has officially invited Edo residents to the Maiden Edition of the Oba of Benin Veterans Cup Tournament closing ceremony which kicks off at 9 am.

“Come let’s celebrate our veterans.

“Oba gha tor kpere! Ise,” the official invite added.
