Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi says Nigeria are favourites to win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Côte d’Ivoire later this month.

The Eagles are on the march again to conquer Africa, with Mikel Obi admitting the team have what it takes to win the prestigious soccer fiesta.

The ex-Chelsea versatile midfielder who was part of Nigeria’s winning side at the 2013 AFCON, believes the current team is good enough to do the country proud, giving the caliber of players in the squad.

Speaking to CNN in an interview, the 36-year-old retired footballer emphatically answered: “Nigeria,” when asked which team would win the continental championship.

The West Africa nation are chasing a fourth title after successes in 1980, 1994 and 2023. They were also beaten finalists in 1984, 1988, 1990 and 2000.

Having represented Nigeria through thick and thin, the Olympic bronze medalist is hoping that this generation of Super Eagles players can put smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

Meanwhile, the former Lyn of Norway midfielder tipped his fellow countryman Victor Osimhen to emerge as the tournament’s best player.

Mikel Obi showered encomium on the reigning Africa Footballer of the Year and was quick to draw similarity between Osimhen and Ivorian legend Didier Drogba.

“Like I have said a few times, he looks to me like Didier Drogba, with a bit of similarity here and there. He will score goals, he will give you goals, and he will hold a play. [He is a] strong, young, {and] energetic striker,” Mikel said.

He added: “If I need to pick a player who will probably win the player of the tournament, I will go for Victor Osimhen.”

John Mikel Obi enjoyed the best part of his career at Chelsea, winning a plethora of trophies including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and amongst others during a 11-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
