The Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), in collaboration with The Carter Centre (TCC), World Health Organization (WHO), and other esteemed partners, joins the rest of the World in celebration of “World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day” celebrated annually every 30th of January.
With a steadfast commitment to eradicate NTDs, this year’s 2024 theme, “Unite to Act towards the Elimination of NTDs” propelled EDSPHCDA to organize a spectrum of impactful activities marking this global event.
The culmination of events included an awareness campaign on Neglected Tropical Diseases and a compelling briefing by the Executive Secretary, EDSPHCDA, Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen. Speaking passionately at his office in Ezoti, Benin City.
Dr. Izedonmwen unveiled the reality of NTDs’ impact on tropical regions, particularly in impoverished communities grappling with water scarcity, poor sanitation, and pervasive poverty. He emphasized the causes of these diseases as stemming from pathogens like fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, unleashing severe consequences on health, society, and economics.
He made a passionate call on Civil Societies, Community and Religious Leaders, Corporate Organizations, Global Health Leaders, and the Government to unite in creating awareness, taking decisive action, and investing in NTDs.
While expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Dr. Izedonmwen acknowledged the unwavering support of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Carter Centre for their instrumental support which has been crucial in realizing the goals and targets for controlling and eliminating NTDs in Edo state.
The day’s event was marked by a spirited Road Walk, with Directors and Staff of EDSPHCDA, State Integrated Health Team (SIHT), State and LGA NTD Coordinators, and Partners like the World Health Organization (WHO) marching around the airport road axis in Benin City. This collective stride aimed to create awareness about NTDs, alleviate the suffering they cause, and rally support for their control, elimination, and eventual eradication.
