MACSA Ekehuan Watch of the University of Benin (MEW UNIBEN) on Saturday, 30th March 2024, inaugurated the new Editorial Board for 2024 administration of the media platform.

The occasion was graced by reporters, outgoing Editorial Board and the founding father of the campus journalism platform, Mr Sunday Ekerikevwe, who is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Benin.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Ekerikevwe, who is widely known as ‘Sunnylove’, charged the student journalists to uphold the principles and practice of the pen profession.

The newly inaugurated editors are Naomi Ewansiha (Editor-in-Chief), Chidimma Kalu (Sub-Editor), ThankGod Ebhoman (Press Secretary), Ruth Irinmore (News Editor), Goodness Okoh (Production Manager), Emmanuella Oko (Health Editor), Silvia Amere (Features Editor), Omoseyi Oluwatumise (Graphics Designer), Success Inegbedion (Graphics Designer 2), Emmanuella Olufeko (Advert Manager), Favour Nweke (Treasurer), and Praise Emuhowo (Publicity Director).

“Journalism is the oldest son of Mass Communication and it started from heaven,” Ekerikevwe said.

Quoting from the book of Revelation 20:11 to substantiate his position, he said, “I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And books were open and one of them was the Book of Life. The dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books.”

He equally enjoined the newly inaugurated Editors to develop more nose for news writing and reporting, which will enable them to cover and report important happenings within and outside the institution.

“MACSA EKEHUAN WATCH has come a long way. This is the 6th Editorial Board of this media platform. I am glad to stand before you as the founding father of this noble media platform. The outgoing administration led by Chief Goodluck Nwabor remains the most active and radical we’ve encountered since the inception of this platform, because he understands the intricacies of this profession and has worked round the clock to uphold the principles and practice of journalism,” Ekerikevwe said.

“This campus journalism platform (MACSA EKEHUAN WATCH) is as a result of the ‘journalistic intercourse’ I had with Mass Communication students in 2019, and after the journalistic touch, they felt the need to start practicing the profession on campus. Glory be to God, it is waxing stronger today. I urge the new Editorial Board to perform better than the outgoing administration so as to push MACSA EKEHUAN WATCH to an enviable height in the society, where NUJ will recognize and commend us,” he said.

In a farewell speech on behalf of the outgoing Editorial Board, Nwabor lauded the reporters and newly inaugurated Editorial Board for their support in bringing MEW to the level it is today. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the new editors and promised them of full backings from the Advisory Council (made up of past Editors and Patrons, Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Ekehuan Campus, Dean of Students, Dean Faculty of Arts, and the Department of Mass Communication in general.

He implored them to work together with the new Executives of Mass Communication Students’ Association, MACSA UNIBEN, in a bid to promote and project the association to the limelight.
