Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his desire to participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but his primary focus is on competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Troost-Ekong has been a consistent presence for Nigeria since making his debut under Gernot Rohr in 2015, accumulating 71 appearances for the Super Eagles during that time.

Last year, Troost-Ekong faced a downturn in his international career, leading to speculation about his potential retirement from international football. However, he made a remarkable comeback at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite being sidelined due to injury since February, Troost-Ekong’s potential return aligns with the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa.

While Troost-Ekong remains eager to contribute to Nigeria’s campaign in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and tournament itself, his ultimate goal is to represent his country in the next World Cup.

“Yes, I will be available for the 2025 AFCON but the 2026 World Cup is my main target and I feel I am coming to the best year of my career. I feel good physically and I am recovering well now. I feel more motivated than before and to really be part of history and join some of the great stars who have won one trophy before.

“So that is one thing I really want to achieve in my career. And I know I need to play well at club level to put myself in the picture and we have the chance to do so hopefully next year in Morocco. It will be better than we did in Cote d’Ivoire,” Troost-Ekong.
For the Super Eagles to secure a spot in the next World Cup, a notable transformation is imperative.

Presently occupying the third position in the group, they trail leaders Rwanda by two points. Their upcoming match against South Africa is crucial, as consecutive victories could propel them to the top of the group standings, placing them in a favorable position to advance.
