… environmental laws, regulations offenders to face court actions, prosecution

Edo State Government has inaugurated the Environmental Sanitation Corps which is a monitoring body to ensure that environmental laws and regulations are adhered to in the State.

Addressing the Corps Members during the inauguration ceremony at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability premises in Benin-City, the Hon. Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Arc. Joshua Omokhodion, enjoined the Corps Members to take ownership of the environment by ensuring the Environmental Sanitation Laws of the State are upheld by the residents.

Arc. Omokhodion said the expectation of Government is that the State will be cleaner and healthier for living and doing business, adding that there will be zero tolerance for extortion and corruption, as anyone caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Note that you are not a revenue generating scheme, you are only expected to enforce the law and on no account must any member be caught for extortion.

“Your core duty is to ensure the city is clean and enforce the environmental laws,” Arc. Omokhodion emphasised.

On her part, the Acting General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mrs. Ehiozuwa Ehis Sandra, appreciated the Honourable Commissioner for promoting cleanliness, enjoining the Corps Members to only apprehend environmental law offenders in order to ensure that the aim of setting up the Environmental Sanitation Corps is achieved.

Director, Department of Monitoring, Enforcement and Advocacy, Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Edward Uwughiaren, advised the newly inaugurated Environmental Sanitation Corps Members to be good ambassadors of the State, describing them as the image of Government to the outside world.

Assistant General Manager on Compliance of the Board, Mrs. Beatrice Imade advised them to dutifully and diligently execute their duties by identifying offenders and handing them over to the appropriate law enforcement agents for further court actions and prosecution.
