Florian Wirtz netted goals in both halves as Bayer Leverkusen dominated Fortuna Duesseldorf 4-0 in a home match on Wednesday, securing their spot in the German Cup final for the fifth occasion.

Although Leverkusen has built a reputation for securing last-minute victories this season, they displayed complete dominance from the beginning to the end against their second-division rivals.

Jeremie Frimpong initiated the scoring seven minutes into the match, followed by Amine Adli notching another goal at the 20-minute mark. Adli, with five goals, leads as the top scorer in the cup competition this season.

Ten minutes before half-time, Florian Wirtz contributed a third goal, and later secured a brace from the penalty spot at the hour mark, ensuring a comfortable win for Xabi Alonso’s team.

The win, which extended Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten record to 40 matches this season, keeps the hope’s alive of a treble for a team with just two major trophies in club history.

They won the German Cup in 1993 but have finished runners-up three times since.

In the final on May 25 in Berlin, Xabi Alonso’s men will face another second division team in the form of twice winners Kaiserslautern, who beat third tier Saarbruecken 2-0 in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
