As the long-awaited completion of the renovation project at the National Assembly comes to an end, heralding the imminent return of legislative activities to the main chambers after months of extensive renovation work, the Senate and House of Representatives are gearing up to reconvene in the main chambers starting from April 23rd, 2024.

Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, recently confirmed the resumption plans in a written announcement to House members, signaling the readiness of the renovated main chamber for legislative proceedings.

The decision to postpone the resumption date from April 16th to April 23rd was made earlier this month by the House spokesman, citing the necessity for the completion of renovation work to ensure the chambers are fully equipped for legislative activities.

Also, Barrister Chinedu Akabueze, the Clerk to the Senate, issued a statement aligning the Senate’s resumption of Plenary with the House’s schedule on April 23rd, as both chambers prepare to return to their revamped main chambers.

Visible Construction Company Nigeria Limited, the company in charge of the renovation project, has reassured stakeholders that the chambers will be fully ready for use by both legislative bodies this April.

The N30 billion renovation project, awarded by the Federal Capital Development Authority in March 2021, encompasses critical upgrades such as office buildings, roofing, cooling systems, and lift replacements, aimed at modernizing and enhancing the infrastructure of the National Assembly.

As the final touches are being added, the transformation of the Hallowed Chambers stands as a testament to the extensive renovation efforts, signaling a new chapter as the National Assembly prepares to resume legislative proceedings in the refurbished main chambers.
