The Nigerian government has recently announced plans to bolster its military capabilities with the acquisition of 24 fighter jets from Italy. This strategic move comes amidst increasing security challenges in the region, particularly with the ongoing fight against insurgency and terrorism.

The Nigerian government is ready to buy at least 24 fighter jets from Italy’s Leonardo to strengthen the country’s air force, with the aircraft arriving in the country in four batches of six jets each.

On Friday, this was stated by the Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet.

“Africa’s most populous nation will receive the first six M-346 fighter aircraft before the end of the year”, the Air Force chief said.

The news followed a visit by Claudio Sabatino, Leonardo’s vice president, to Nigeria’s air force chief in Abuja.

In a statement released by the Air Force, it was revealed that Leonardo, the manufacturer of the fighter jets to be acquired by Nigeria, will offer a minimum of 25 years of maintenance support.
