Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, emphasized the importance of carefully managing the fitness of Nigeria Victor Boniface.

Boniface made his return to action in Die Werkself’s 4-0 victory over Fortuna Dusseldorf in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday.

This marked the Nigerian striker’s first appearance for the Bundesliga leaders this year, following surgery for an adductor injury earlier in the year.

Alonso stressed the need to avoid rushing Boniface back into action.

“His (Boniface) outing against Düsseldorf was good for him, but he won’t be able to start yet. We want to help him bit by bit to get that good feeling on the pitch again,” Alonso said.
