The Edo State Government, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Olympian Yussuf Alli, and two Edo Queens players experienced showers of honours during an Award on Friday, organised by Naija Women Football Awards, 2024.
The award was tailored to recognise distinguished persons who have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Women’s Football in Nigeria and the ‘Girl-Child.’
The awards feature various categories of women football players across the country of clubs involved in the NWFL premiership, administrators, and best women football clubs in Nigeria.
In the category of excellence, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Olympian Yussuf Alli, was given an award of Excellence for his contributions and managerial skills vis-a-vis players’ welfare, discipline of team, teamwork, branding, and general organization among others.
Suliyat Abideen of Edo Queens Football Club of Benin won the Best Midfielders’ Award of the Season, Goodness Osigwe, emerged winner of the Best Attackers’ Award, while Edo Queens FC grabbed the Best Club of the Season Award.
Chairman of Bayelsa Queens FC, Pastor Robin Apreala, was honoured with the award of Best Administrator of the Season.
Best Goalkeeper of the Season Award went to Sylvia Echefu of Confluence Queens; Nasarawa Amazons’ defender Esther Adesoji smiled away with the Best Defender’s Award; Folashade Ijamilusi of FC Robo won the Award for the Best Forward of the Season; Bako Moses Nagogo was honoured with an Award for his contributions to women football development.
The Chairperson of Nasarawa Amazons Hajija Hussein Suleiman, got an Award of Excellence, while Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Daniel Igali, was equally honoured for his role in Bayelsa State Sports Ministry.
Commending the organisers on behalf of Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, for the award, former Nigeria International Bright Omokaro, on receiving the award thanked the organisers for the great honour done to the State, adding that Edo State Sports Commission will continue to play a pivotal role in sports development in Nigeria.
