Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill of N409.2 billion to accommodate all ongoing projects and infrastructural development in the state.

The passage of the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill was sequel to the consideration of the request of Governor Godwin Obaseki contained in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Osarodion Ogie, seeking the approval of the House for the year 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill of N409.2 billion.

The year 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill with a grand total of N409.2 billion has a total of N182.5 billion earmarked for recurrent expenditure and a total of N226.8 billion for capital expenditure.

The House at the Committee of Supply following the suspension of relevant sections of the House Rules approved and passed the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill of N409.2 billion into law.

Following the passage of the bill at the committee of supply, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, thereafter directed the Clark of the House, Mr. Yahaya Omogbai, to give the bill its third reading and also to forward clean copies of the bill to the governor for his assent.

Earlier, the Majority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian, disclosed that the passage of the year 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill became necessary in order for the state government to accommodate the increase in the new minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000, and other inflationary factors that have led to the devaluation of the naira under the current economic structure.

Recall that Governor Godwin Obaseki had in December 2023 signed into law the year 2024 Appropriation estimate of N342 billion.

Meanwhile, the House during plenary also passed the bill for a law to domesticate the harmonized retirement age and years of service for teachers in Edo State, increasing it from 60 to 65 years or 35 to 40 years of service.
