Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board Member, Hon. Obong Nse Essien, has recognized the numerous impact of Troost Ekong Foundation launch and called on football lovers to join in celebration of Ekong’s gratitude to God.
“Troost Ekong Foundation is all about appreciating God’s faithfulness by giving back to the society. The foundation aims at giving out scholarships to the young ones. It will also encourage those he will develop their sporting talents to do so while combining sports with education,” Essien said.
According to the event organizers, 30-year-old Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has donated his future allowances and match bonuses to support the sports Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization with a core mandate to make a direct impact by improving local schools and orphanages, with a long-term plan to build sports facilities in Akwa Ibom for promising talents.
“An educated sportsman will be able to hold his or her own at any point in time. We as a people are happy with Ekong and we are proud to identify with his achievements. I am using this opportunity to call on other professionals and those who are well to do in the society to always think about the less privileged,” Hon. Essien, who is the boss of FC One Rocket, complemented Ekong’s pioneering idea.
“Let me use this opportunity to also thank people like Kanu Nwankwo, Emmanuel Emenike, Odiong Igalo, Ahmed Musa, and others who have used their resources to affect the society positively and I am glad to see my own Troost Ekong following these lofty examples. God bless his endeavours.”
A Charity Football match was played on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Nest of Champions, Uyo by 4pm to formally launch the Foundation.
The match featured lots of ex-internationals, current Super Eagles players, some foreign players and friends of Troost Ekong in the entertainment industry. Some football stars ready for the event included Stanley Nwabali, Calvin Bassey, Daniel Amokachi and Kano Nwankwo, etc.
