Calabar – Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Out, has appointed His Royal Majesty (HRM) Oval Solomon Osim Edward, paramount ruler of Abi Local Government Area, as the new chairman of the State Council of Chiefs.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Anthony Owan Enoh, released the statement to journalists in Calabar, at the weekend announcing the new appointment.
The statement further stated that the governor’s authority to make this appointment is derived from Section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law, Cap C15 Laws of Cross River State 2004.
According to the statement, the appointment takes effect from Friday, June 21, 2024, and is for a term of two years.
This decision comes after the Cross River State House of Assembly passed a resolution urging the governor to remove HRM Dr. Etim Okon Edet, the paramount ruler of Bakassi, for allegedly overstaying as the chairman of the Council of Chiefs for over a decade, defying state laws. HRM Edward’s appointment marks a change in leadership within the state’s council of chiefs.
This move is expected to bring fresh perspectives and leadership to the State Council of Chiefs, promoting accountability and adherence to state laws, according to the Council members.
