Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has again reiterated his determination to give the Calabar Golf Club the needed support to enable it rank among the best in the country.

Governor Otu gave the assurance during the closing ceremony of the first-year Anniversary of Governor’s Inaugural/Democracy Day Golf Kitty that was rounded off amid fanfare in Calabar.

The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Mrs. Agnes Atsu, used the occasion to thank the members of the club for the honour accorded His Excellency and assured them that the state number one citizen will embrace the game of golf in no distant time.

The Sports Commissioner who was persuaded by the club to sponsor the Ladies Golf Clinic with the view to popularize the game among women in the state gave the greenlight that the Ladies Golf Clinic will be organized as soon as possible, adding that what she needed urgently now is for the club leadership to furnish her with details as regard the programme.

Earlier, the captain of the Calabar Golf Club, Maj. Gen. A. M. Sabo (rtd.) had congratulated the Governor on his achievements and one year in office, expressing delight that the Governor has shown tremendous interest in the game and expressed the hope that the partnership should be sustained for the club to grow to an eccentric heights.

In his vote of thanks, the Chairman Organizing Committee of the competition, Igbe Aruku, had commended the Governor for making the people to appreciate what democracy is all about, and thanked the sponsors and all those that contributed to the success of the big event.

At the end of the 18 Holes Kitty, Ayodele Onabule emerged the overall winner when he returned 74 nett in category 1 – 12. Eneobong Orok became the runner up when he scored 77 nett on count back, while Fidel Usie came third with 77 nett.

Brenda Joseph with a nett score of 93 became the Ladies winners.

In the veteran category, it was Paul Ebiala who put up a work-man-like challenge to emerge the winner with a nett score of 85 while Jesam Iwara was the runner up with 86 nett.

Sunday Ahiherre was category 2 winner with 75 nett while the duo of Raymond Ovat and Igbe Aruku became the runner up and first runner up winners, respectively.

Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of prizes to those who excelled.
