An Edo State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member organised a “Learn to Click” community development project to enhance digital literacy among students and youths in Oredo Local Government.
The ceremony which marks the culmination of the project was celebrated in Benin City, Edo State capital on July 19, by the founder, Abdulwahab Adamson O., a serving corps member in the state to equip the Senior Secondary Students with essential computer and digital skills, paving the way for a more technologically empowered future.
Launched on May 28, 2024, at the Impact Educational Centre, the project has provided comprehensive training in Computer Operations, Microsoft Word, Internet Navigation, and Digital Resource Utilisation.
Abdulwahab, in his address, revealed the inspiration behind embarking on the initiative as a community development project.
“The idea for “Learn to Click” came to me while teaching Senior Secondary School students. I asked them a question about computers, and their responses made it clear that they had very little knowledge about computer literacy.
“Being someone with digital skills, I realised how important it was for them to learn even the basics of using a computer. That’s when I thought, “Why not teach them?” This inspired me to start the “Learn to Click” project, to help students and youths in Oredo LG gain essential computer and digital skills,” Abdulwahab explained.
According to Abdulwahab, participants were made to engage in interactive sessions, hands-on workshops, and collaborative projects for over two months, gaining invaluable skills critical in today’s digital age.
Highlights of the ceremony were the showcasing of the newly acquired skills by the students and the presentation of certificates of completion.
After delivering an insightful speech, Abdulwahab expressed gratitude to members of his team, Blessing Chukwumah, Josephine Idam, and Lawal Temidayo who are also corps members for their support, as well as his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) for their unwavering support while encouraging everyone to embrace technology and innovation.
Mr. Adebayo Tosin Emmanuel, a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocate, delivered an inspiring speech on the value of education, urging students to strive for excellence. He stated, “Education is the key to unlocking countless opportunities. It empowers individuals, builds communities, and drives societal progress.”
Akubo Prince, a beneficiary and SS1 student of Impact Educational Centre, expressed gratitude for the initiative stating that it has helped him learn how to design using Photoshop, and noting that the training has given him valuable digital skills and new opportunities.
Osaro Isabella, another beneficiary expressed her excitement, saying, “Thanks to ‘Learn to Click’, I can now navigate a computer effortlessly, use simple computer shortcuts, and browse the internet.”
Some of the distinguished guests present at the ceremony were Barr. Ogedengbe Peter, the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Oredo, other NYSC officials, Mr. Ikponmwosa Nosakhare, Proprietor of Impact Educational Centre, the NYSC Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Community Development Service (CDS) group members, students, and school staff.
