Spain’s Lamine Yamal became the youngest goalscorer in men’s European Championship history at 16 years and 362 days during Tuesday’s semi-final against France in Munich.
Spain defeated France 2-1 to advance to the Euro 2024 final, their first major tournament final in 12 years. They will face either the Netherlands or England.
Randal Kolo Muani gave France an early lead, but Lamine Yamal equalized with a brilliant goal, making him the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. Dani Olmo’s 25th-minute strike secured the victory.
The Barcelona winger’s stunning 25-meter shot broke the previous record held by Switzerland’s Johan Vonlanthen, who was 18 years and 141 days old when he scored at Euro 2004.
Yamal had already become the youngest player to feature in the tournament when he started Spain’s opening group game against Croatia.
Three-time champions Spain became the first team to win six games at the Euros and are one match away from a record-breaking fourth title.
France, finalists in three of the past four major tournaments, faced scrutiny over their failure to capitalize on their strong attacking lineup.
Spain will compete against either England or the Netherlands in Sunday’s final.
