The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, has announced that the federation will name a new coach for the Super Eagles within the next few days.
The team’s next competitive match is scheduled for four weeks’ time.
“We have shortlisted three coaches, and one of them will be chosen,” Gusau revealed in an interview with Sports Village Square in Nantes, France. However, he declined to disclose the names, saying, “I don’t want to interfere with the committee’s assignment.”
Sources close to the federation suggest that Hervé Renard, the current coach of the France women’s team, is among the contenders. Renard’s contract with France expires on August 11, and he boasts an impressive track record, having led Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire to AFCON titles in 2012 and 2015, respectively. He also guided Saudi Arabia to a notable 2-1 win over Argentina in the last World Cup.
The new coach will prepare the Super Eagles for their AFCON 2025 qualifier against Benin Republic on September 2 in Uyo. The match is a crucial one, as Benin Republic recently defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier.
