The police have detained Peace Emovon, who has accused her former partner, Tokoni Gladys Amaran, of knowingly infecting her with HIV/AIDS. Emovon, who confessed to being involved in a same-sex relationship with Amaran, reported the matter to the authorities after discovering her diagnosis. This has led to a broader investigation, resulting in the arrest of four other individuals.

According to Emovon, her relationship with Amaran began when they reconnected at a gathering of former classmates from Lydia Group of School in Benin City. Despite regularly taking Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication, Emovon claims she was unaware of her partner’s HIV status and engaged in unprotected sex with Amaran.

In an emotional conversation, Emovon expressed feelings of betrayal, stating that Amaran never disclosed her health status throughout their relationship. When confronted with the diagnosis, Emovon presented her medical report to Amaran, who allegedly denied responsibility, leading to a heated altercation and the eventual end of their relationship. Emovon further expressed concern that Amaran may be putting others at risk, as she has moved on to a new relationship with Esther Aghedo.

The police, after receiving Emovon’s complaint, summoned Amaran for questioning on two occasions. However, she evaded arrest when officers later attempted to apprehend her at her residence. During the investigation, the police detained Esther Aghedo and four other individuals for allegedly engaging in lesbian activities. Medical assessments have also revealed that Aghedo and one other individual tested positive for HIV.

Despite the accusations, Emovon acknowledged Amaran’s charitable efforts, particularly her support for her late sister’s son, Adelowo Olamiposi Oyewole, an orphan under Amaran’s guardianship. Emovon has requested a medical examination for Oyewole to determine his health status.

Amaran’s legal representative has since produced a police invitation letter for Amaran and stated that her whereabouts remain undisclosed due to her vulnerable state. The lawyer revealed that Amaran was a victim of sexual assault by a military officer during her youth—a traumatic event that was reported but never acted upon before the officer’s death. The lawyer emphasized that these circumstances have left Amaran deeply distressed and should be considered in any legal proceedings.

The lawyer insists that the matter should be resolved through the judicial system and has denied any direct responsibility on Amaran’s part for the transmission of the virus. The legal process, according to the lawyer, will include a thorough investigation, witness testimonies, and possibly a trial to establish the facts.

Meanwhile, a warrant has been issued for Tokoni Gladys Amaran’s arrest. Amaran, originally from the Kolokuma/Opukuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was born on January 2, 1981, in Lagos. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Rivers State College of Education.
