The Nigerian Senate on Thursday amended its standing order 8 (2), 2023, as amended to suit its current realities.

This was sequel to the motion moved by the Senate Leader, Bamidele Opeyemi, titled “Amendment of the Standing Order of the Senate pursuant to Order 109 of the Senate Standing Order, 2023”.

In his lead debate, Opeyemi noted that the Senate standing order was amended in 2023 to accommodate issues that would make the orders more dynamic to facilitate effective legislative process.

He stressed the need for further amendment of order 8(2) to reflect the current realities.

In his contributions, Senate President Godswill Akpabio proposed that the amendment should be carried out in sequence.

He suggested that the seating time should be moved to 11 am to synchronize with the House of Representatives.

In response, Senator Ahmed Lawan (APC, Yobe North) expressed displeasure with the Senate President’s proposal, adding that the house has no reasons for seating at 11 am.

The Senate went into closed session for proper deliberation on the matter and after the closed session it was resolved that the seating time be moved to 11 am and close at 3 pm in the absence of any other matter.

The Clerk of the Senate was mandated to reprint the Senate standing order with the new amendment.
