In a display of sustained aggression and determination, Callum Simpson overcame Zak Chelli to claim the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles by unanimous decision at Oakwell Stadium in his hometown of Barnsley. The judges scored the bout 118-111, 118-110, and 117-111 in favor of Simpson.
Simpson’s victory was met with ecstatic cheers from the hometown crowd as he was declared “the new” champion after 12 intense rounds. Right from the opening bell, Simpson made his presence felt, staggering Chelli with a powerful right hook late in the first round, much to the delight of his supporters. Chelli was visibly hurt and resorted to holding, but Simpson continued his relentless pursuit, landing a right uppercut as he pressed forward.
The second round saw Simpson using feints effectively to unsettle Chelli and land clean shots, including another solid right hook to the head. Chelli, known for his forward style, struggled to gain momentum and found it difficult to get on the front foot. Although he managed to land some hooks, Simpson’s aggression and effective jab kept him in control.
Chelli had a moment of success in the fourth round, landing a flush right hook that momentarily halted Simpson’s advance. However, Simpson quickly regained his composure and continued to press the attack in subsequent rounds. Chelli tried to force exchanges but often found himself clinching or backing into the ropes under Simpson’s relentless pressure.
Simpson’s momentum dipped slightly in the fifth round as Chelli managed to force him back and land some effective shots. Despite this, Simpson remained the aggressor, countering Chelli’s right hooks and pushing forward with powerful combinations. Even in clinches, Simpson continued to work, landing body shots that took their toll on Chelli.
The fight’s intensity peaked in the ninth round when Simpson renewed his assault, driving Chelli into the ropes with a series of punishing right hooks. Chelli responded with quick counters but was forced to move and clinch to avoid further damage. Simpson’s relentless energy and pressure carried him through the final rounds, earning him the judges’ unanimous decision.
After the fight, Simpson expressed his elation and acknowledged the hometown support. “It was amazing. The main thing for me was to not let the occasion get to me,” he said. “I made a lot of mistakes, but a win is a win. I’m nowhere near the finished article, but we’re well on our way. I want to prove I’m the best in this division. I want to win the British title outright. Once I’ve cleaned up domestically, then we’ll push on.”
Simpson’s victory not only secured him the British and Commonwealth titles but also set the stage for his future ambitions in the super-middleweight division.
