All is set for the maiden edition of Edo State Invitational Swimming Competition as the Edo State Aquatic Association confirms readiness to host teams from twenty states in Benin City.
The swimming competition which has national colouration began on Thursday, August 8, with the arrival of the participating teams, while the event proper is billed for Friday, August 9, at the Swimming Pool Complex of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.
The competition is expected to climax on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the same venue, beginning at 8:00 am.
According to the programme of the event sponsored by the Chairman, Edo State Aquatic Association, Mr. Clement Minabowan, the First Lady of Edo State, Dr. (Mrs.) Betsy Obaseki is expected to declare the event open as the special Guest of Honour and mother of the day.
Other important personalities invited to honour the occasion include the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo and his running mate Barr. Osarodion Ogie Esq. Others include the Executive Chairmen of the eighteen Local Government Councils in Edo State.
The Edo State Aquatic Association also extended the invitation to the rest sports associations in the Edo State Sports Commission, as well as the general public to a part of the first Edo Invitational Swimming Competition that promises to produce future Nigeria and African champions like Vincent Okunwe, Ngozi Mammah, Osagie Johnson, Poland Benazimo, Friday Idehen, Rachael Tonjor and others who started from the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Swimming Pool Complex.
Teams that registered for the 2-day Swimming Competition include Yy Swimming Club Lagos, Imo State, Ogun, Rivers Bayelsa, Kano, Kaduna, Cross River, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States. Others include Gombe State, Ondo, Enugu, Harmony Club Ilorin, Kwara State, and Jimi Osinowo Club of Ebonyi State.
