… says working to bring improvement to Nigerians
President Bola Tinubu addressed Nigerians Sunday, August 4, the fourth day of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest across the country, saying he is sensitive to the pains and feelings of countrymen, calling for the suspension of the protest and seeking dialogue with its leaders.
The protests were orderly in parts of the country but spiraled out of control in others, hijacked by miscreants and mischief makers, leading to arson, looting and the loss of lives.
The protest kicked-off Thursday, August 1 with the aim to highlight to the Federal Government, mounting discomforts being endured by the general populace as a result of economic hardship from the rising cost of goods and services, including food, and seek reliefs.
The economic hardship came in the wake of twin decisions of President Tinubu to remove the troubled fuel subsidy regime and put the local currency, the naira on free float.
Economist said the moves would bring repair to the nation’s economy in the long term but be fraught with severe pains in the short term.
In a dawn broadcast, Sunday,President Tinubu said:”Under the circumstance, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protests and create room for dialogue, which.
Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all , regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation.
“To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation: Be warned, the law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry or such threats in the Nigeria we seek to build.
On the economic situation in the country, Tinubu stated: “For decades our economy has remained anemic and taken a dip because of many misalignments that have stunted our growth. Just over a year ago, our dear country Nigeria reached a point where we couldn’t afford to continue the use of temporary solutions to solve long-term problems.
“I therefore took the painful, yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our nation and impeded our economic development and progress.
“This has given us more financial freedom and room to spend more money on you our citizens, to fund essential social services like education and healthcare. It has also led to our State and Local Governments receiving the highest allocation in our country’s history from the Federation Account.
