The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, Minister for Youth Development, has flagged off the 2024 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) tree-planting campaign in Nasarawa.
The campaign which was inaugurated on Monday, August 26, marks the beginning of a significant environmental initiative by the NYSC.
In a statement, Caroline Embu, NYSC’s Deputy Spokesperson, quoted Bio-Ibrahim as saying that tree planting is an effective way of fighting desertification, erosion and other impacts of climate change.
“I would like to also appeal to all and sundry to support the Scheme in this important mission of preserving nature,” Bio-Ibrahim said.
She urged Nigerians to embrace the campaign with dedication and plant a tree each as the success of the initiative hinges on the innovative spirit of the youths.
The event, with the theme ‘Each One Plant And Nurture One’ was held at the state NYSC orientation camp, Magaji Dan Yamusa in Keffi, where NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, alongside local officials and environmental advocates, kicked off the campaign.
Speaking, the Director-General of NYSC, said the scheme has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Environment, National Environmental Standards Regulations Enforcement Agency and the National Agency for the Great Green Wall Project, to address the issue of environmental degradation.
The NYSC DG said each corps member is expected to plant and nurture a tree during their service year.
The event highlighted the NYSC’s commitment to engaging Nigerian youths in crucial environmental conservation efforts.
“The Annual NYSC Tree Planting Week will be institutionalized with activities taking place simultaneously in all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
“In this regard, I appeal to relevant agencies of government and non-governmental organizations to give us the necessary support for the benefit of our dear country,” Ahmed said.
“This campaign is a crucial step in our fight against climate change,” General Ahmed said during the ceremony.
“By mobilizing our youths to plant trees, we are taking a proactive approach to restore our environment and combat the adverse effects of climate change,” he added.
The NYSC’s tree planting campaign aims to plant one million trees across Nigeria over the next year. The initiative will focus on reforestation efforts in degraded areas, enhancing urban green spaces, and supporting local biodiversity. The campaign is expected to involve thousands of NYSC members who will carry out tree-planting activities in various regions of the country.
In addition to the tree planting efforts, the NYSC will also conduct educational programs to raise awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable practices. The initiative has received support from government agencies, environmental organizations, and private sector partners, who have pledged resources and technical assistance.
The launch event featured a symbolic tree-planting ceremony with participation from NYSC officials, corps members, and local community representatives. The event aimed to inspire broader community involvement and highlight the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
General Ahmed called on individuals and organizations across Nigeria to join the NYSC in its efforts to protect the environment.
“This campaign represents an opportunity for us all to contribute to a healthier planet.
“By working together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure a sustainable future for future generations,” he maintained.
