Nigerian athlete, Favour Ofili finished sixth in the final of the women’s 200 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics, held on Tuesday in France.

In an impressive display of speed and determination, the 21-year-old sprinter clocked an impressive time of 22.24 seconds, finishing behind gold medalist Gabrielle Thomas of the United States, who took the title with a blistering time of 21.83 seconds.
Ofili’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, as she became the first Nigerian to compete in the women’s 200m final at the Olympics since Mary Onyali did so in Atlanta ’96. Despite being outraced by her fellow finalists, Ofili’s performance demonstrates her potential for future success on the international stage.

The final was a highly competitive affair, with Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred taking the silver medal with a time of 22.08 seconds, and USA’s Brittany Brown completing the podium with a time of 22.20 seconds. Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita finished in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Ofili had qualified for the final with the third-best time overall in the semi-finals, but she struggled to keep up with her fellow finalists in the showdown. Despite a strong start, she faded in the final 100m of the race, ultimately finishing sixth.
