The #StartupSouth Enterprise Development, a social enterprise and innovation ecosystem development organisation, has organised a workshop for 50 Nigerian journalists focused on technology and innovative journalism.

The journalists, drawn from print, electronic, and online media in the South-South and South-East regions of Nigeria, participated in the two-day hybrid workshop.

This workshop serves as a prelude to the #StartupSouth Conference 9, which will be held in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State on October 3-4, 2024. The aim was to enhance journalists’ skills in technology reporting and strengthen the technology ecosystem.

Experts from the media and technology industries shared their expertise on various aspects of tech journalism. Mr. Uche Aniche, the convener of #StartupSouth, highlighted the gap in technology reportage by traditional media due to limited understanding of the tech ecosystem.

He emphasised the need for journalists to keep abreast of trends in the ecosystem through reading, collaboration, and capacity building to boost standard practices in technology reporting.

Chioma Ezenwafor, co-facilitator of the training, underscored the importance of technological journalism in today’s world, noting that technology drives innovation and shapes modern society while holding government and tech industries accountable.

Resource persons at the workshop included Frank Eleanya, Senior Reporter at Tech Reporter at TechCabal; Keni Akintoye, Founder of iBrandTV; Jonah Solomon, Corporate Communications Manager, Unity Bank PLC; Peter Oluka, Founder, Techeconomy; and Jessica Hope, Founder of Wimbart PR, UK.

They emphasised the need for journalists to enhance their knowledge in tech and innovative journalism to transform the technology ecosystem for standard practices and provided a roadmap for journalists to distinguish themselves in tech journalism.
