Experienced Swedish coach Janne Andersson has confirmed he is in discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding the vacant Super Eagles coaching position but emphasized that no agreement has been reached yet.

The 61-year-old Andersson is currently available after stepping down as Sweden’s coach in November 2023 following their failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

The Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Finidi George resigned after Nigeria’s disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

In response to the vacancy, the NFF’s Executive Committee decided to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in preparation for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.

Despite rumors linking Andersson to the Super Eagles coaching role, the NFF clarified earlier this week that no official appointment has been made.

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Expressen about the situation, Andersson said, “Nigeria is a major footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation.”

“It’s a huge footballing nation, so I’m extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach.

“Dialogue is ongoing, and I don’t really want to say more than that. I have been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen in different ways.

So we’ll see what happens in the future.”
