Former BBNaija star and two-time Nigerian high jump champion, Mike Edwards has made a successful debut in professional boxing, winning against Jake Cornish at the Dublin Arena.
Edwards, competing in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division—a league led by English social media personality and Nigerian-born professional boxer Olajide Olayinka Williams, known as KSI—secured a unanimous decision victory from the judges after a full bout.
Making his debut on Saturday, August 31, Edwards has transitioned from his track and field career to boxing. He expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter, saying, “Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”
Before moving into boxing, Edwards had a distinguished career in athletics. A British track and field athlete who switched allegiance to Nigeria in August 2018, he achieved a lifetime best of 2.25m in the high jump. He won the Nigerian national championships in 2021 and 2022, reached the final of the African Athletics Championships twice, and narrowly missed out on a gold medal in 2022.
Edwards also competed as a finalist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
As Edwards embarks on this new journey, his fans are eager to follow his progress in professional boxing, where he aims to make a notable impact with his skills and determination.
