…Shehu Sani, Amnesty International condemns DSS invasion of SERAP office

Officers of the Department of State Services (DSS), have invaded the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). Reports said that the officers were asking to see the rights group’s directors.

According to a post on SERAP’s X handle (formerly Twitter), which read: “Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians,” SERAP said.

Meanwhile, reacting to the development, the former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, in a post on his official X handle, expressed concern over the invasion, stressing that security agencies must respect the fundamental rights of the organisation.

He wrote, “The reported invasion of the SERAP office is concerning. Security agencies must respect the fundamental rights of the organisation, its officials and members as guaranteed by the constitution of the country.”

Similarly, Amnesty International has criticised President Bola Tinubu for the ‘unlawful’ invasion of SERAP’s office by operatives of the Department of State Services.

Amnesty International reacting through a post on its X account, said the president was going too far in his administration’s efforts to suppress dissenting voices.

The statement reads “Amnesty International received a disturbing report of the unlawful invasion of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project by operatives of the DSS. President Bola Tinubu is going too far in his government’s repressive efforts to silence dissenting voices.”
