In 2022, I went to Erie Street for the first time in my life. It was on this above film set location for ‘King Asemota’ that I first encountered Angela Eguavoen and Ebony Obasuyi. This visitation was important for me because I was learning filmmaking from a practical perspective. I observed that a lot of work time goes into building the setup for each film scene in order to bring the best out of it.
Being a first-timer, I didn’t know what continuity meant and how it simplifies the filmmaking experience. Individual parts known as scenes have to be shot independently and later clipped together during post production. Ebony Obasuyi was in character for one of such scenes and I stood in awe as she memorized her dialogue and began her delivery. She flawlessly executed her lines like a true professional.
From that moment onwards, she stole my heart and I started looking forward to more of her films. I’ll briefly take us through some of her films and why you should look out for this exceptional daughter of Edo State.
MISTAKES OF THE NIGHT: Ebony Obasuyi was sensational in this film production as she kept eyes glued to her thrilling performance. She plays Linda who gets married to a “supposedly-happily-married-Ken” (Tony Okoli) who is being chased by a woman outside. But I love the conclusion to this film. In the end, true love should prevail above all else.
KING ASEMOTA: From the stables of Slize TV comes this highly intense and dramatic series cloaked in Benin culture. I was especially excited to see our veteran stars like Baba Cliff Igbinovia and Omo-Osagie Utetenegiabi and a dear industry colleague of mine, Emmanuel Ebhodaghe. However, I was fancifully taken by Ebony Obasuyi’s beautiful performance with her portrayal of Ifueko. We could easily sympathize with her character because she symbolizes those oppressed by power and influenced by their circumstances. This peculiar story was personal to me. I was anxious to see how this film came out because I was at the film set location.

CONCLUSION: Ebony Obasuyi is a devoted creative and hardworking professional who enjoys and basks in the adoration and well-deserved affection of her teeming fans all over the world – millions of eyes from different countries that are eager to see her latest productions and features. Aside from that, she has years of industry experience which accounts for her flawless takes and deliveries.
I was on the Internet recently and a speaker said: “It is the behind the scenes work you do that people don’t see or appreciate that makes the main work, work.” How simple, yet profound. Ebony has been working hard behind the scenes and that is why she shines so effortlessly and is never intimidated by the strength of her assigned role.
As a proper daughter of Edo State, Ebony Obasuyi wholly exemplifies the essence of creativity that our people stand for. We are energetically and creatively endowed. It’s in our blood. I see only more success and prosperity for Ebony Obasuyi as she continues to excel in her craft, and I know success awaits her because she is not afraid of hard work. An Edo woman like her makes difficult work look easy. I celebrate this exceptional daughter of Edo State and may her impact continue to reign and resound throughout the ages as she keeps on flying Edo flag from Edo To The World.
