The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, encouraged women to take up farming. She said this at the closing ceremony of the 24th National Women’s Conference organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, the Punch reports.
The event, themed:” Soar Beyond Boundaries: Enriching Communities” was held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
She emphasized that beyond pushing for more representation in leadership roles, “we must showcase what makes women exceptional and vital – particularly when it comes to resourcefulness and innovative thinking.
“In this regard, I strongly advocate for women to engage in farming, including backyard gardening. This is not only an economical approach but also a way to reduce our reliance on buying food items that can be grown and consumed by our families,” Dr Sanwo-Olu said.
In a way to stimulate economic growth and food security, Dr Sanwo-Olu, has urged women to embrace farming. This call to action is expected to have a positive impact on the economy, creating jobs, stimulating local economies, and increasing food production.
Farming can contribute significantly to the GDP, generate foreign exchange earnings through exports, and reduce poverty by providing employment opportunities. Additionally, increased domestic production can lead to lower food prices and reduced inflation.
Encouraging women to take up farming, the governor’s wife is promoting economic development and women’s empowerment. This can be seen as a key driver of economic growth in Nigeria.
As the state government continues to promote agriculture, residents are encouraged to support local farmers and invest in farming. With the right support and resources, farming can become a key driver of economic prosperity in Nigeria.
