A 38-year-old medical doctor, Kenneth Okono Inyang, on Monday appeared before an Uyo Magistrates Court in Akwa Ibom State over alleged threat to life of one Mrs. Alice Joe Henry. The defendant is standing trial on a two-count charge of breach of peace and threat to life.

He, however, pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor, Barr Ofonbuk Charlie, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 10 and September 2, 2024, at Shelter Afrique Extension, residence of Alice Joe in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The Police lawyer said following a misunderstanding between the defendant and the complainant, the defendant unlawfully restrained the complainant’s movement.

The prosecutor said the defendant also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by blocking the entrance of the complainant’s house and denied her access to her house.

According to the prosecutor, breach of peace and threat to life, are offences punishable under Sections 18 (1) of Akwa Ibom State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law 2020 and Section 214 (d) of the criminal code, cap 39, Vol 2 Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria 2022.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned till October 11 for mention.

Fielding questions from journalists at the end of the court session, the complainant Mrs. Alice Joe, said her life is in danger as she is living in fear and no longer can tolerate any more for the sake of any unforeseen circumstances.

“I believe in the court as the last hope of a common man, that’s why I am here for justice to take its cause, my life is in danger – I have tried all my possible best to tolerate this man who is my tenant. I have served him several quit notices to vacate my compound since he cannot conduct himself peacefully in the environment, but he refused and now I cannot bear this anymore,” she cried.
