… Edo vs Delta football clash cancelled due to irregularities

Asaba, Delta State – Day 5 of the National Youth Games saw Team Edo maintain its impressive performance, with cycling sensation Divine Ogbe leading the charge.

The Edo-born athlete clinched her third gold medal in the female point road race, solidifying her position as a force to be reckoned with in Nigeria’s cycling scene.

In athletics, Seth Adindu won gold in the men’s Discuss, setting a new national record in the Para-Athletics category. The team also secured a silver medal in the 4×100m female race, demonstrating their versatility and depth.

Edo’s judo team made its mark, with Miracle Udoh winning Gold in the 40kg Judo Boys category. This victory adds to the state’s growing medal count and reinforces its reputation as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.

In chess, Eguavoen Henry Oghogho secured a silver medal for Edo in the Classical category on board 3. Youngsters Zita Agusionu (9 years old) and Ayeni Fareedah also impressed, winning silver and bronze medals respectively in the female categories on boards 3a and 2.

Meanwhile, controversy surrounded the semifinal football match between Team Edo and Delta State, which was postponed due to irregularities. Team Edo officials insisted that Delta team officials present proper identification documents for four new players introduced into their team, suspecting foul play.

“We demanded that Delta team officials provide the required documents to verify the eligibility of their new players.

“Unfortunately, they failed to comply, leading to the postponement of the match,” a Team Edo official stated.

However, the organizers have yet to announce a new date for the match.

Team Edo’s impressive performance has sparked hopes of a successful outing at the National Youth Games.
