Two-time runners-up, Nigeria’s U20 women’s football team, the Falconets, were defeated 1-3 by Germany on Thursday in their second Group D match at the ongoing 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the match took place at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, Colombia.

The Nigerian team struggled to match the intensity of the German side during the game.

With this victory, Germany moved to the top of the group with six points from two games, while Nigeria remained in second place with three points, following their earlier win against South Korea.

Germany opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Sehitler Alara capitalized on a defensive mistake by the Nigerian team to find the back of the net.

Although the Falconets found it difficult to gain momentum in the first half, they came back stronger in the second half, equalizing in the 50th minute through a goal from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.

However, Germany quickly regained the lead in the 61st minute, as Sofie Zdebel netted a precise finish.

The Falconets had a potential goal ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Despite Nigeria’s push for another equalizer, their efforts were thwarted when Sarah Ernst sealed Germany’s victory with a third goal.

Germany’s win leaves them with a perfect record of two wins from two matches, while Nigeria now faces a tougher challenge in securing qualification for the Round of 16.

The Falconets are now awaiting the result of the Korea Republic vs Venezuela match to determine their current standing.

To advance to the knockout stages, Nigeria will need a strong showing in their final group game against Venezuela.

The Falconets will play Venezuela on Saturday, while Germany battle Korea Republic.
