… as team restates commitment to securing trophy

The Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Olympian Yusuf Alli addressed the Edo Queens, inspiring them to go for the prestigious trophy as they prepare to represent Nigeria at the Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Morocco.

Alli gave the charge during a spirited farewell meeting on Tuesday at the Samuel Ogbemudia in Benjn City, Edo State.

The Edo Sports Commission Chairman’s address emphasised unity and determination, reflecting on past victories and urging the team to replicate their recent success in Ivory Coast.

“Everything is set, and in place for us to go to Morocco and conquer, just like we did in Ivory Coast,” Alli declared.

He reassured the team of Edo State Government’s commitment, confirming arrangements for their travel and accommodation at the well-known Ibis Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco. The chairman also acknowledged the players’ needs, including securing proper food provisions with assistance from the Nigerian Embassy in Morocco, saying, “I don’t think feeding will be an issue”.

Promising full support and financial rewards, the Chairman expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bring the trophy home.

“We will come here with the cup. I’m sure the Cup is coming to Nigeria,” he added.

The head Coach of Edo Queens, Moses Aduku, and Captain Efemweokiekie Osakpolor also expressed their gratitude to the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration and the Edo State Sports Commission for their immense support and encouragement, stating their determination to make the State and Chairman proud.

“By the grace of God, we are going to make not just the State proud, but also make you (our Chairman) proud,” Captain Osakpolor stated confidently.

The Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Edo State, Comrade Kehinde Osagiede extended his appreciation to the Edo State Government, including the Executive Governor in absentia, noting that the team’s achievements have already made history by winning the female league and now advancing to the West African qualifiers.

“Our wish is that this team will go far and bring the Women’s Champions League to Nigeria,” he concluded, applauding the team’s dedication.

The Edo Queens will depart for Lagos at 8:00 am on Wednesday, followed by their journey to Casablanca, Morocco, on Thursday at 5:10 am.
