Krishav Morang and Uche Ubakanma clinched victories in the men’s and women’s categories of the 2024 Indian Cup golf tournament, which concluded last weekend at Ikoyi Club 1938’s golf section in Lagos.
Morang, playing with a handicap of 20, delivered a remarkable performance with an 82 gross score during the one-day event, securing the overall best net player title (62 net) with a five-shot lead over Mike Makinde, who scored a 67 net.
In the women’s category, Ubakanma captured the top prize by shooting a 92 gross with a 25 handicap, finishing two shots ahead of Adeola Banjoko, who took second place.
Evelyn Oyome earned the women’s gross prize, while Shade Opawunmi won the guest player category.
Six-handicap player Ankit Puri achieved the best gross score of the tournament with a 74, two over par for the 18-hole round on Saturday. Remi Olukoya and Akar Talah were the runner-up and second runner-up, respectively.
Aby Matthew, Chairman of the Indian Cup Organising Committee, highlighted the event’s vibrant atmosphere, emphasizing the strong relationship between the Indian and Nigerian business communities.
“We are grateful for the support from various brands, especially InBev, Zenith Bank, African Steel, and Pepsi. It was wonderful to see over 400 players competing throughout the week for different honors,” he remarked.
Matthew also noted that the Indian Cup has become a traditional hub for business-minded golfers at Ikoyi Club, contributing to the significant corporate backing the event receives.
“This year, CFAO and Guinness joined in, showcasing their products. CFAO even offered one of their Suzuki models as a prize for a hole-in-one, though it went unclaimed. This gesture reflects the event’s growing prestige among other tournaments on the Ikoyi Club calendar,” he added.
