Barcelona and Spain’s prodigious talent, Lamine Yamal, has been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2024 Golden Boy Award.

The award, an annual recognition by Italian outlet Tuttosport, celebrates the most exceptional under-21 footballer in Europe.

The announcement was made during a live-streamed event on Wednesday, with the official trophy presentation set for December 16.

At just 16 years old, Yamal, who already boasts the Kopa Trophy in his collection, triumphed over a competitive shortlist of 24 nominees. Among the contenders were Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, Paris Saint-Germain’s Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Real Madrid’s Endrick. The list also featured other promising talents such as Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), and Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich).

This achievement makes Yamal the fourth Barcelona player to win the Golden Boy Award, joining the ranks of Lionel Messi (2005), Pedri González (2021), and Gavi (2022).

He is also the fourth Spaniard to receive the honour, following in the footsteps of Pedri, Gavi, Isco Alarcón (Málaga, 2012), and Cesc Fàbregas (Arsenal, 2006).

Yamal’s victory highlights his remarkable ascent in European football, as the teenager continues to impress with his scintillating performances for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Established in 2003, the Golden Boy Award is one of the most prestigious accolades for young players, with past recipients including football icons like Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Wayne Rooney.
