The House of Representatives has confirmed the appointment of Lieutenant General Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff. While the constitution does not mandate confirmation of such appointments by the House, lawmakers adopted the report of their ad-hoc committee, which conducted the screening of the Acting Chief of Army Staff.

Chairman of the committee, Babajimi Benson, presented the report and confirmed that Lt. Gen. Oluyede had met all the necessary requirements for the position.

Oluyede was initially appointed in an acting capacity by President Bola Tinubu in October following the illness of former Army Chief, Taoreed Lagbaja. The president later wrote to the National Assembly, seeking confirmation of Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Army Chief, praising his commitment to national security.

Accompanied by senior military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Oluyede expressed his honor at the nomination, emphasizing his commitment to contributing to the fight against insecurity in Nigeria. He noted, “I have operated at senior operational and management levels of the Nigerian Army for the past five years, and I consider this nomination as an opportunity to bring positive changes to the Army and strengthen its ability to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.”

He concluded by promising to uphold the confidence placed in him by President Tinubu, the National Assembly, and all Nigerians.
