BENIN CITY — The Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday successfully mediated the leadership crisis in the Egor Local Government Area, with both factional leaders of the legislative arm agreed to step down in the interest of peace and development.
This resolution followed a critical intervention by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, led by Hon. Uyi Omosigho, who engaged in urgent talks with the councillors of Egor. The resolution aims to restore harmony and ensure continued progress in the local government.
The crisis, which has lingered since June 25, 2024, stemmed from the impeachment of the council chairman, Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia, and the subsequent suspension of some councillors, including the House Leader, Hon. Bosede Omokaro. The situation worsened due to allegations of favoritism by the council chairman, who was accused of selectively paying allowances to certain councillors.
Hon. Godwin Edigin, representing Ward 3, outlined these grievances, accusing the council boss of neglecting certain councillors while fully paying the allowances of those loyal to her. He further suggested that some of the discontent among councillors was driven by concerns over the dominance of women in leadership roles, both at the council and legislative levels.
However, Hon. Bosede Omokaro, representing Ward 1, denied these claims, asserting that all councillors were fairly included in the council’s decision-making processes and that the council chairman had acted within her responsibilities.
Despite these differences, both factional leaders agreed to set aside their differences and step down temporarily as part of efforts to restore peace. The decision will remain in effect pending the outcome of the Edo State House of Assembly’s ongoing investigation.
Hon. Sunday Aghedo, a member of the committee, emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, warning that escalating tensions could result in the councillors losing their positions entirely. He encouraged dialogue, stressing that sustainable development could only be achieved through unity.
Hon. Uyi Omosigho, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, called on both factions to honor the agreements made and work collaboratively to resolve the crisis. He emphasized that cooperation between all parties was essential for the greater good of the council and its constituents.
The Edo State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, had earlier instructed the committee to investigate the underlying causes of the crisis and submit its findings within two weeks.
This move follows the receipt of two separate petitions regarding the turmoil in Egor Local Government during the Assembly’s plenary on Tuesday. The resolution represents a significant step toward ensuring stability and fostering cooperation within the local government.
