The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the immediate swearing-in of three outstanding State High Court judges-designate.
In a press released signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place today, Monday, 2 December 2024, at 1:00 PM in the State Executive Council Chambers at the Government House in Benin City.
The judges-designate—Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe—were among eight candidates recommended by the National Judicial Council for appointment as judges in June 2023. However, they were not sworn in during the previous administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki, despite being cleared for the role.
Governor Okpebholo’s decision to proceed with their swearing-in underscores his commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening the judiciary in Edo State. The governor expressed his firm belief in respecting the principle of the Separation of Powers as enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution, emphasizing the importance of a robust judiciary to deliver justice and fairness for all.
The event marks a significant step toward ensuring that the state judiciary is equipped to fulfill its critical mandate.
