The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to unveil a new foreign coach for the Super Eagles in January, ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled to begin in March.

A top NFF official disclosed on Thursday that the federation is in the advanced stages of hiring a high-caliber coach to lead the team to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to reporters, the official stated: “We are working diligently to appoint a quality foreign coach who can take over from Austin Eguavoen. Interviews are ongoing, and by January, we will finalize the selection and present the candidate to the board for ratification. The coach will assume duties at least a month before the World Cup qualifiers.”

Austin Eguavoen, who served as the interim coach, successfully guided the Super Eagles to secure a ticket for the 2025 African Nations Cup. However, he is expected to return to his role as the NFF’s Technical Director.

The Super Eagles face a precarious situation in their World Cup qualifying campaign, sitting fifth in their group with three points from four matches. Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic lead the group with seven points each, while Lesotho sits in fourth place with five points. The team must overcome these challenges to avoid missing the World Cup for a second consecutive time.
