In a significant demonstration of compassion and commitment to the welfare of its citizens, the Edo State Government has provided financial assistance to traders who are victims of the fire outbreak in Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area, which occurred in January 2025.
The fire swept through the bustling market reducing numerous shops to ashes and destroying goods worth millions of naira, leaving many traders in distress.
Following the unfortunate incident, Governor Monday Okpebholo expressed deep sympathy for the victims and reassured them of the government’s commitment to supporting their recovery.
True to this promise, the state government, through the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) mobilised resources and collaborated with key agencies, including the local government council, to carry out an on-the-spot assessment to ascertain the extent of the damage and provided immediate relief.
As part of deligence, the Edo State Government, through EdoSEMA, identified 14 traders who suffered significant losses and provided them with financial assistance to help them rebuild.
Speaking during the cash disbursement event, the Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, emphasised that the compensation was based on a thorough assessment.
“We conducted an on-the-ground evaluation to determine the level of damage suffered by traders. After careful assessment, we identified 14 victims who lost their goods and means of livelihood.
“Following Governor Okpebholo’s directive, we are here to ensure that these traders receive financial support to help them start over,” he stated.
The Acting Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Okwilagwe Valentine, praised the swift response of the state government, describing it as a reflection of the governor’s deep concern for the people of Edo State.
“The Governor’s quick intervention in the Jattu Market fire disaster is a testament to his dedication to the well-being of Edo people. This financial support will go a long way in helping the affected traders recover their losses and restart their businesses,” he remarked.
For the traders who received the financial assistance, the gesture was a lifeline. Many of them, having lost their entire sources of income to the fire, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government for the timely support. A beneficiary, who identified herself as Madam Esther, shared her relief, saying: “I thought all hope was lost when I saw my shop burnt to the ground. But today, the government has shown that they truly care. With this financial support, I can begin again.” Another trader, Mr Abdulrahman, also lauded the initiative, adding: “This money may not replace everything we lost, but it will certainly help us rebuild. I sincerely thank the Governor and EdoSEMA for coming to our aid.”
Beyond the financial relief, the Edo State Government has assured traders that efforts are ongoing to prevent future fire outbreaks in markets across the state. Plans are being put in place to improve fire safety measures, enhance emergency response capabilities, and support affected traders with long-term recovery strategies. As part of this initiative, EdoSEMA is working closely with market leaders and relevant agencies to raise awareness of fire prevention while also exploring further support programmes for traders.
In the event of any future emergency or disaster, EdoSEMA has reaffirmed its commitment to responding swiftly at any given time. Residents are encouraged to call the toll-free emergency number 739 to report incidents and receive immediate assistance.
The intervention by Governor Okpebholo’s administration not only restores hope to the affected traders but also reinforces the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Edo people.
