Benin City – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of a young child in Benin City following an unfortunate incident involving members of the Public Safety Response (PSR) Team.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bugie Okhuemoi, the governor described the incident as “deeply painful and devastating” and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

.”No parent should have to endure such an unimaginable loss, and I share in their sorrow during this difficult time,” he said.

Governor Okpebholo has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. He assured Edo residents that anyone found responsible would be held fully accountable, emphasizing that “no life should ever be lost due to negligence or recklessness.”

The PSR Team, established to maintain public order, protect infrastructure, and curb illegal activities such as street trading and unauthorized parking, has faced growing public concerns regarding its operations. In response, the governor has directed a comprehensive review of the team’s structure, recruitment process, authority, and engagement procedures with the public.

“We recognize the concerns raised by residents regarding some of the PSR Team’s procedures,” the governor stated. “This review aims to ensure that all government-sanctioned activities uphold the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and respect for human dignity.”

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and rights of Edo citizens, warning that any government agency found to dehumanize or endanger the people would face strict consequences.

“Governance must serve the people, not bring them harm,” he declared. “We are taking decisive steps to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”

The governor urged Edo residents to remain calm as the government works to address the issue with urgency and sincerity.
